The 3 Best Thai Desserts for Non-Adventure Eaters

When it comes to Thai desserts, move over chocolate…. it’s all about the fruits here! The climate is perfect for growing fruits including, but not limited to, mangos, coconuts, bananas, pineapples, passionfruit, dragon fruit, and papaya. There is cheap and delicious fruit on every corner, and many Thai desserts utilize the abundance of nature’s candy.

I’ve had a few unique Thai desserts since being in Thailand. But trying strange-looking and odd-smelling items from the side of the street isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

Here are the 3 best Thai desserts that non-adventure eaters are sure to love.

1. Mango Sticky Rice

Mango sticky rice is THE quintessential Thai dessert. It consists of glutinous sticky rice, mango, coconut milk, and perhaps a few mung beans sprinkled on top to tie it all together. The chewy, slightly salty, rice compliments the tender sweet mango to perfection while the coconut milk adds a rich creaminess

The ever allusive “they” say that perfect doesn’t exist. But “they” have never tried mango sticky rice.

Expect to Pay: 60-100 THB is the usual, but it can be more expensive in Bangkok.

2. Thai Roti

Thai roti carts pop up along the streets as the sun goes down. This Thai dessert consists of a piece of dough that is stretched thin and cooked on a hot plate. Common fillings are egg, egg and banana, and banana and Nutella. Usually, condensed milk is liberally drizzled on top, maybe even some Nutella if you’re feeling frisky.

A perfect Thai roti is a little crunchy on the outside and just sweet enough without overwhelming the palette.

Expect to Pay: 40-60THB

3. Khanom Ba Bin- Grilled Coconut Pancakes

Grilled coconut pancakes are like a warm, flat macaroon with a lovely sweet coconut flavor and slightly chewy texture. They are made with both glutinous rice flour and normal rice flour, sugar, egg, coconut and water. Often, different essences will be infused to add a different flavor. While you might not find them in Western Thai restaurants, they are totally delicious and anything but intimidating… perfect for non-adventure eaters!

Expect to Pay: 10-30 THB

These 3 Thai desserts are simple, delicious, far from intimidating, and are sure to satisfy adventure eaters and non-adventure eaters alike.
