Austin Taco Rundown: 3 Days, 4 Taco Spots

Tacos are one of my favorite types of food. They are easy to eat, relatively cheap, and you never really know what flavor journey your taste buds will embark on. A kick of spice? A tickle of sweet? A hint of cilantro and lime? Something totally yawn inducing? Something that will totally blow your mind?

Austin is home to a thriving tex-mex scene with restaurants and food trucks everywhere you look. Over my three day trip, I hit up four different taco spots.

Let’s dive in to my Austin taco run down!

4. Veracruz All Natural

Veracruz All Natural specializes in better-for-you tacos that have fresh ingredients. I tried an al pastor, a grilled fish, and a vegan option which had refried beans, cauliflower, avocado,  and corn. While the vegan taco had great textures and earthy flavors, the fish and al pastor were plain jane with no thrilling flavor component that would have me coming back for more. Especially, when each taco is nearly $5 a pop. Click HERE for my full review.

3. El Primo

El Primo is a road side truck that specializes in migas tacos—breakfast tacos that consist of egg, cheese, and tortilla chips. The tortilla chips added a nice crunch and the hearty amount of egg was filling and satisfying. It gave me the same warmth, comfort, and happiness that I feel when noshing down on a bacon, egg, and cheese bagel from a New York City bodega.

2. Tochy’s Tacos

Torchy’s has built up a strong reputation in Austin and beyond for its tasty tacos and badass branding. The menu has exciting taco offerings with both traditional and inventive options. I ordered the carnitas taco as well as a Jamaican jerk chicken. Both were perfectly crafted with the right balance of ingredients and exciting flavor pops that had me wanting more. Click HERE for my full review.

1. La Tunita 512

La Tunita 512 is an unassuming food truck next to a Payless Foods. What it lacks in eye-appeal, it makes up for in flavor. The brisket birria tacos are packed full of chili, onion, and cilantro. Dip it in the consome (broth), and you’ve got one solid food experience. And at $2.50 a taco, La Tunita 512 gets The Frugal Foodies Favorite Austin Taco award. Click HERE for my full review.

Wrapping up my Austin taco rundown..

I barely dipped my toes into the Austin taco scene, but I will certainly be back to take the full plunge.
