Pizza is one of my favorite types of food. Bead, cheese, sauce, toppings…. what’s not to love? I’ve eaten an outrageous number of slices in my life, which means it takes a lot for a slice to permeate my memory.
I thought I knew nearly every type of pizza to grace this planet. But this year I discovered a new style: Argentine pizza. The main distinguishing feature is the copious amounts of cheese. Eating it with a fork and knife is a necessity, not a suggestion. Learn more about the history and features of Argentine pizza HERE!
In Buenos Aires, I went to Pizzería Güerrín to snag a classic Argentinian pie. 1/2 was fugazza, which is a unique type of pizza smothered in cheese and caramelized onions. 1/2 was ham and cheese. No sauce on either. The crust was beautifully crispy and crunchy with just enough softness in the middle. The ingredients were fresh and flavorful. (Why does it always seem like food in other countries just tastes better?) A true treat to try, and a memorable pizza experience for the books.
Fini Pizza is a Williamsburg slice shop serving up classic New York style pizza, but with some elevated twists.
The tomato slice is something special. It has a lovely zing of acid with a subtle sweetness and bold richness. It’s refreshing to have a slice that isn’t smothered in cheese. Rather, a gentle dusting of pecorino ties everything together. A culinary masterpiece, which is why it is #2 on my 3 best pizza slices of 2023 list.
Scarr’s Pizza is a grungy Lower East Side institution serving up stellar pizza slices and retro vibes.
The Hot Boi slice dances through my head when people ask me, “What’s your favorite pizza in NYC?” It has jalapeños, pepperoni, and hot honey, all on the most perfect crispy, thin New York style pizza crust. (Learn about the history of NY style pizza HERE!) It’s spicy, sweet, salty, crunchy, and simply pure perfection.
