The Best Cookie in Brisbane?: A Review of Mr. Treat

Brisbane cookie bakers watch out. There’s a new cookie shop on the block, Mr. Treat, and oh boy do they mean business.

Nestled in Fortitude Valley on Brunswick Street, Mr. Treat’s tiny store front serves up massive chunky cookies chocked full of sugar, butter, and a healthy dash of attitude and swag. The fist sized mounds are loaded with ooey gooey fillings such as salted caramel (which is actually salty) and Nutella Oreo (with actual Oreo cream), and the slightly crispy outside yet soft inside are a cookie lover’s dream.

PS. Mr. Treat also serves up soft serve! Rumor has it it’s pretty darn tasty, but I haven’t tried it.

A cookie-induced dopamine boost comes with an inevitable sugar crash. But the box gives the encouraging reminder that it’s, “Worth every single calorie.”

But is it?

New York City mega cookies have set quite the lofty bar in the world-wide cookie scene. In fact, cookie shops across Brisbane specifically market their “New York Style Chunky Cookies.” Levain Bakery is the mother of all chunky cookies, with a walnut chocolate chip number that’s so utterly delicious that you wonder how you deserve to even exist in the presence of such perfection. Check out my ultimate guide to the best New York mega cookies for the 411.

How does Mr. Treat stack up? Here’s a ranking of the 7 flavors we’ve tried (What can I say, we are suckers for an up-sell…)

7. Double Chocolate Chip

While this bad boy was suppose to have white and milk chocolate chips, it didn’t seem to have any. Wouldn’t recommend.

6. Red Velvet

Unpopular opinion: I think red velvet is overrated. While I enjoyed the chocolate flavor and cream cheese drizzle, our red velvet cookie was short on the cream cheese filing. Which is the only reason why anyone springs for red velvet, if you ask me.

5. S’mores

The S’more cookie at Mr. Treat features ample chocolate chips and gooey toasted marshmallow that compliments the slight crunch of the exterior. Will I look back on it as a culinary treasure when I’m old and gray? Probably not. But I love s’mores, and I enjoyed this cookie.

4. Salted Caramel White Chocolate

This bad boy features a vanilla base stuffed with white chocolate chips and a healthy dollop of salted caramel ganache that is actually salty! I repeat, the salted caramel is actually salty!!! The salted caramel helps balance out the incredibly sweet base, making for a tasty concoction that will satisfy fellow sweet/salty lovers.

3. Caramilk

Since arriving to Australia, I’ve fallen head over heels for Caramilk, and I’ve fallen head over heels for this Caramilk cookie. A vanilla base, white chocolate chips, Caramilk topping, and a SALTED caramilk ganache filling. Be still my beating heart! I polished it off without taking a picture; a true indicator of deliciousness.

2. White Chocolate Biscoff

This Mr. Treat creation delivers on both flavor and texture with the perfect ratio of cookie base to white chocolate to Biscoff. The inside is nice and soft without the “ooze all over your hand” effect while the outside had that heart pounding crunch. I appreciated the thickness of the Biscoff spread, and it’s a cookie I’d certainly have again (and again and again…)

1. Oreo Nutella

If you’re going to get one cookie from Mr. Treat, get the Nutella Oreo. The vanilla base is filled with Nutella AND an Oreo cream with bits of Oreo and chocolate sprinkled about. All the components compliment each other without overwhelming the palate, and it is truly a mega cookie experience for the books.

The Verdict on Mr. Treat

Does Mr. Treat stack up to the iconic behemoths of NYC? Well… no. Called me old fashion (not just because I do crosswords and go to bed at 9pm), but I’m a foodie who swears by the basics. In a #doifforthegram driven food scene full of wild concoctions that translate to a likeable photo, I look for how well a restaurant or bakery can do the classics: A plain croissant, a slice of pepperoni pizza, a standard cheeseburger, and, in this case, a chocolate chip cookie. Check out my thoughts in “Is Instagram Ruining Food?”

With that being said, Mr. Treat does serve up delicious cookies that are certainly the best I’ve tried in Brisbane. The insides are gooey, not gummy. The outside is a bit crunchy, not soft. The flavors are creative, but not so outrageous the flavors don’t mesh.

You won’t be sad with a box of Mr. Treat creations in front of you… gaurenteed!
