After countless slices, we’ve done it, we’ve found the best pizza in New York.
I know what you’re thinking, “WOW… That’s a bold statement!!!”
We’ve gone to popular Lower East Side spots, checked out famous pies in Jersey, ordered countless chain pizzas, and had our fair share of NY staples such as Joe’s and Artichoke. However, one pizza continues to reign supreme: Mama’s Too!
DISCLAIMER: please note this is the best pizza in New York, not the best New York Pizza.
Mama’s Too! is a hole in the wall Upper West Side spot on 106th and Broadway, and is well worth the trek regardless of where you live. Pizza master Frank Tuttlolomondo from the nearby Mama’s Pizza opened the shop in December 2017 with the goal of creating elevated New York pizza with fresh ingredients and simple, powerful flavors. The pies aren’t frilled up with crazy toppings like tacos and pasta. Rather, they have classic flavor combinations done extraordinarily well like fennel and sausage and gorgonzola and pear.
The square slices are a blend of Sicilian, Detroit, and Roman style pizza with a perfect crust that has crispy, almost burnt, edges and a just-thick-enough base that can withstand the weighty ingredients without being too bready. The cheese to sauce ratio is spot on, and the quality of the toppings is top notch, making for an outrageous culinary experience that is nothing short of perfection.
It’s one of those culinary delights that is just so delicious you are left speechless with a “how do I deserve to live when something this delicious exists?” sort of feeling.
No matter what you order, you can’t go wrong. We personally love the classic pepperoni featuring dozens of glistening, beautiful, flavorful roni cups or springing for the Angry Nonna Pie with hot soppressata, mozzarella, chili oil, and hot honey.
So give it a try…. and if you think a better pizza exists, be sure to let us know!
