The Devils Backbone Basecamp Brewpub: Brews, Views, and BBQ

If you’re looking for solid brews, beautiful views, and delicious BBQ, then you need to check out the Devils Backbone Basecamp Brewpub in Roseland, VA  at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Devils Backbone first got it’s taps pouring in 2008. The beers were such a hit that it was purchased by  Anheuser-Busch InBev just 8 years later. Now, Devils Backbones brews 128 different beers. Some with a quite a few awards!

The Devils Backbone Basecamp Brewpub isn’t just for beer lovers. You can score some stellar BBQ too!

Here’s a look at what I tried.

The Beers:

I ordered the Electric Cockatoo. Partly because I love IPAs, partly because I liked the name. It had a lovely balance of citrus to hops and certainly hit the spot on the surprisingly warm October afternoon.

The Appetizer:  Smoked BBQ Hummus Dip with Chicken

The Virginia Heartland Burger:

While we didn’t ask for a double patty, we got it! The patties were decently juicy with a slight charred flavor. The simple toppings of lettuce, tomato, onion, and cheese helped the patties shine, and the bun to topping to burger ratio was spot on. Was it life changing like Hashtag Burgers and Waffles in Brisbane? Nope! Was it fine? Sure.

Devils Smokehouse Platter

If you’re a true carnivore, go for the gold and get this platter. But be warned, it’s enough food for 3, probably 4, people. The smoked kielbasa was plump and juicy with a smoky, slightly cheesy flavor. The pulled pork had too many chunks of fat for my liking, but the ribs made up for it.  These babies were outrageously tender and soft with a delightful flavor that didn’t need to be drowned in BBQ sauce.

The surprise of the platter were the sides. The baked ranch beans were thick and rich with a delightful saltiness from the chunks of ham. The jalapeño smoked cream corn was sweet, spicy,  creamy and flat out delicious. Certainly not good for my cholesterol, but a treat for the soul. I ordered an extra side of roasted sprouts, which weren’t anything to write home abou.

Final thoughts on the The Devils Backbone Basecamp Brewpub

If you’re cruising along skyline drive in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Devils Backbone Basecamp Brewpub is the perfect place to take a break. It’s got good beer, good food, and a relaxed atmosphere…
