My Top 5 Doughnuts of 2022: Because Who Doesn’t Love Fried Dough?

In the United States, we love dessert for breakfast. Pancakes. French toast. Sugar-laden cereals like Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Cookie Crisp. I’d argue that most muffins are simply cupcakes without frosting.

We’re not the only ones to start out the day with dessert. You’ll find croissants in France, Hagelslag in the Netherlands, Cornetto in Italy, and Eirkuchen in Germany… just to name a few.

There’s one type of dessert for breakfast that you’ll find in all pockets of the world: fried dough.

Whether you’re roaming around Kenya or meandering through China, chances are you’ll find some sort of fried dough available for your enjoyment. (Click HERE for an impressive top 100 list.)

And of course there’s the humble doughnut. (To learn about why doughnuts have holes click here!)

When reminiscing over 2022, I realized I’ve eaten an absurd amount of doughnuts. So let’s bite into my:

Top 5 Doughnuts of 2022 Countdown.

5. Cinnamon Sugar Doughnut from Duck Donuts

There’s nothing quite like a hot off the fryer cinnamon sugar doughnut, and Duck Donuts nails it. The franchise makes made to order doughnuts that are simply exquisite, earning it the #5 spot on my top 5 doughnuts of 2022 list.

4. Cereal Mochi Doughnut from Alimama Tea in NYC

Mochi doughnuts are tantalizingly chewy, perfectly sweet, and a hot confectionary craze that has hit big cities. The OG mochi doughnut spot in NYC is Alimama Tea—a small shop in Chinatown serving up teas, creampuffs, and all types of mochi doughnuts. The cereal mochi doughnut is dense and chewy with a satisfying crunch and dash of nostalgia from the cereal coating.

The origin story of mochi doughnuts involves Hawaii, Japan, and… Brazil! Get the 411 HERE.

3. Glazed Doughnut from Anita’s Decadent Delights in Bridgewater, VA

Anita’s Decadent Delights serves up massive glazed doughnuts that are both mega fluffy and ooey-gooey-melt-in-your-mouth at the same time. A hidden gem of the Shenandoah Valley that I can’t believe I didn’t uncover until just this yea.

2. Ube Cheesecake Doughnut from Dough, Numerous Locations Across NYC

I love the classics, but I also have a flair for extravagance. The Ube Cheesecake Doughnut special from Dough is extravagance at its finest. The filling had a thick cheesecake texture and prominent ube flavor that wasn’t too sweet. Ube is having a big moment in the food sphere, and I’m not mad about it.

1.Mochi Doughnut from Win Son, NYC

I searched far and wide for the best mochi doughnut in NYC… and this, my hungry friends, is it. The mochi doughnut from Win Son in Brooklyn, NY is amazingly chewy, dense and soft with a unique cinnamon/sugar coating that has a pinch of salt. It was the easy winner of my top 5 doughnuts of 2022 list.

Cheers to a year of some top notch doughnuts!

And remember, stay frugal!

Katie

  • cinnamon sugar is a close second after maple old fashioned. I'm not of huge donut fan, but if either of those are on the table, I'm having one.
