Asian fusion in NYC is a BIG DEAL. You can find the likes of Jewish-Japanese, Korean-Spanish, and Portuguese-Chinese restaurants serving up grub that meshes ingredients and cooking techniques to create flavors your taste buds could never dream of.
Asian fusion in NYC can often come at a lofty price tag. That moody lighting and thoughtful decor aren’t free. Want to keep it cheap? Skip the fancy meat dishes and go with a wrap.
Forsyth Fire Escape’s humble beginnings go back to 2021. Founder Isabel Lee whipped up a scallion pancake burrito that was inspired by her California roots fused with her and her partner’s Chinese, Thai, and Dominican cultures.
But they got the tasty concoction to their customers in a creative way: via a bucket lowered down from their fire escape.
It took the NY foodie world by storm and getting your hands on one was like winning a gold medal in the Olympics. I’m no athlete, so I lusted from the sidelines.
The landlord wasn’t pleased and they began selling their viral scallion pancake burritos from a bodega. Now, Forsyth Fire Escape has a 6-month residency at Olly Olly Market, and I FINALLY got my hands on one.
And let me say…. It is pretty darn tasty. A scallion pancake is filled with super tender, slow roasted marinated pork , fried queso blanco, and guac. A house made lemongrass chili crisp oil adds a light, fragrant spiciness to cut through the heaviness of the pork. It’s an Asian fusion wrap that’s well worth trying.
Win Son Bakery in Brooklyn is a hip Taiwanese eatery that serves up epic pastries, coffees, and breakfast sandwiches. (It’s the locale of my top doughnut of 2022! Click HERE for the rundown!)
The BEC on a scallion pancake is genius. There’s no shortage of “heritage bacon” (whatever that means) and they use raclette as the cheese, which adds an ooey-gooeyness and slightly nutty flavor. If that’s not heart thumping enough, it’s all wrapped up in a greasy scallion pancake. The scallion flavor adds a nice freshness and the pancake is ever so crunchy.
This gem features egg, cheese, herbal sausage, and Thai basil snuggly wrapped up in roti with a chili jam on the side. The eggs were perfectly fluffy and the sausage added that element of grease that’s so pivotal to a breakfast sandwich. Everything was held together in a warm and soft roti. Dip that baby in the chili jam, and you’ve got one hell of a breakfast sandwich!
