Austin, Texas has the type of food scene that gets my heart thumping and dopamine pumping. There are little food trucks and hole-in-wall spots around every corner. Who knows what flavor experiences each holds?
In New York City, most food spots have been found and exposed by foodies such as myself. But in Austin, I feel like a miner staring at a mountain laden with hidden gems just waiting to be discovered.
I spent 4 days in Austin visiting my childhood best friend, her husband, and their dogs. We went on walks, watched movies, played games, and, of course, ate!
Here are 3 Austin eats that I loved, and I think you’ll love too!
3.Brooklyn Breakfast Shop
Brooklyn Breakfast Shop is a food trailer situated in Thicket Food Truck Park. They serve up breakfast bagels, bowls, and fried chicken sandwiches that are finger lickin’ good. We tried the monthly special, which featured a bacon jalapeño jam, as well as the Sweet Heat which had a healthy dousing of hot sauce.
Both had buttermilk fried chicken that was thick and juicy, and a gentle heat that was a light kick rather than full on punt.
The one factor holding the sandwiches from Brooklyn Breakfast Shop back from greatness was the crunch factor. Light breading is all well and good. But I think a thicker coating that creates a crunch that can be heard across the room would pump this Austin eat up a notch.
Pro Tip: Brooklyn Breakfast Shop gets busy! We arrived around 10am and they were already out of biscuits, and we snagged the last couple monthly specials. Order ahead and go early so you don’t miss out!
Cost: $12.50 a pop, which is pricey. But hey, I guess if you have a name like “Brooklyn Breakfast Shop” you might as well have New York prices.
2.Granny’s Tacos
No Austin eats list is complete without a taco recommendation, and mine for you is Granny’s Tacos. This food truck serves up different tacos, quesadillas, and tortas. And oh man do they mean business!
My favorite taco from Granny’s Tacos was the chicken alambre, which was loaded with chicken, cheese, jalapeños, and peppers. I also thoroughly enjoyed the birria, which had ultra tender meat and just enough pico and cilantro to bring that freshness factor. The al pastor reminded me of the streets tacos I had in San Miguel de Allende. My least favorite was the Abuela which had shredded pork and avocado. The pork had big chunks of fat which just didn’t tickle my tastebuds.
Cost: $4.25 a pop. Given how loaded they were, I think it was a fair price!

1. Loro
Loro is a Korean fusion spot with a Texas twist, and it was my favorite of all my Austin eats during the trip. Amber and I shared the karaage appetizer, which had delightfully crunchy chicken that paired splendidly with the creamy avocado sauce. (Karaage is a Japanese cooking technique of deep frying food—most commonly chicken.)
For my main, I got the Malaysian Chicken Curry bowl. The curry was bright and vibrant with splash of coconut and lick of heat. Cilantro and radish added pops of freshness, and the rice absorbed all the flavors to perfection.
Pro Tip: Loro has a great happy hour weekdays 2-5pm with food and drink specials. We snagged the karaage for $7.50 and mango slushies for $5!
Cost: The menu items range from $10-$20. The bowl was $14, which I think was a fair price.
These 3 Austin eats all bring something different to the table via unique flavors, locations, and ambiances. Plus, you won’t walk away hungry!
Happy eating!
