6 Unique Dishes in Oaxaca City That You Need to Try

Oaxaca is the most ethnically and linguistically diverse states in Mexico with a unique biodiversity to match. In fact, out of 570 municipalities, 418 are indigenous. The influence of this diverse makeup is realized via art, pottery, crafts, customs, and, my personal favorite, food!

The capital of Oaxaca, Oaxaca de Juárez (also called Oaxaca City), is the perfect place for visitors to feast on the area’s gastronomy. From fast paced markets to sit down venues, Oaxaca City is one of the top destinations in Mexico for foodies.

You better believed I dived in to all the new culinary experiences my stomach would allow!

Here are 6 unique dishes in Oaxaca City that you need to try.

1.Tlayuda

Tlayuda in Oaxaca City

When it comes to popular street food in Oaxaca, Tlayuda reigns supreme. A tlayuda consists of a thin and crunchy plate sized tortilla that is covered with refried beans, pork lard, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, salsa, and all types of meat. Some are served open faced (common at markets and restaurants), some are served folded (common for street food stalls).

Tlayuda is often referred to as “Oaxacan Pizza” given the shape and toppings. But the flavors are undeniably Mexican. The corn tortilla and refried beans give the dish an earthy flavor, the pork lard adds a richness, lettuce and tomatoes give a zing of fresh, and all the meats add spice and pizazz.

It’s like a hard shell taco, a quesadilla, and nachos decided to all get together to form a brand new dish. And it’s a must try when visiting Oaxaca City!

2. Tejate

Tejate in Oaxaca City

Tejate is a non-alcoholic beverage made of toasted corn, fermented cocoa beans, toasted and ground mamey pit, and cocoa flowers. These ingredients are made into a paste, then they are mixed with water to form a beverage that you’ll only find in Oaxaca.

It’s beautifully unique, and unlike anything I’ve ever tasted. But as a foodie, I’ll do my best to paint your palette a picture. A frothy, chocolate milk with earthy tones peaking their way around floral notes. Each vendor has her own recipe, and you can get it sweetened however you like.

3. Memelas

Memelas in oaxaca city

Memelas are a traditional snack food that consist of fried masa (maize dough) topped with various fresh ingredients ranging from salsa to refried beans. Unlike corn tortillas, memelas are thicker, chewier, and have an oval shape. The mouthfeel is more bread-like, and the toppings vary from vendor to vendor. It’s cheap and filling, and one of hte omre popular street food dishes in Oaxaca City.

4. Oaxacan Tamales

Tamales in Oaxaca City

Tamales are a traditional Mexican dish that consist of filled cornmeal dough that is steamed or baked in corn husks. What makes Oaxacan tamales special is that they are usually prepared with moles, and they are often steamed in banana leaves. Oaxacan moles use regional ingredients you won’t find elsewhere, making these tamales a dish in Oaxaca City that you need to try.

5. Mezcal

Mezcal cocktail from Expendio Tradicion in Oaxaca City

Mezcal is a spirit made from agave, and the majority of it is made in Oaxaca. While mezcal is just now becoming popular in the United State, it has been a used in celebrations, rituals, and for healing purposes in Mexico for hundreds of years. Mezcal has smokier, more complex flavors than tequila, and it’s perfect for sipping. But I will say I’m a sucker for a mezcal margarita.

You’ll find mezcal stores and bars across Oaxaca City, and no visit is complete without giving it a try.

6. Chapulines

Chapulines, or grasshoppers, are a popular snack food in Oaxaca. They are cleaned, marinated, then toasted or deep fried before being eaten as-is or added to other dishes. You’ll often seen chapulines on guacamole, memelas, tostadas, and tlayudas. They have a nice crunch and tasty earthiness. Plus, grasshoppers are high in protein and micronutrients! (Stay tuned for a deep dive to come.)

Many Mexican dishes are heavy on the corn and fatty meats. So why not try out the chapulines to get your vitamins and protein in?
