A Drool-Worthy Quest to Find the Best Pizza in Australia

“What is your favorite food?” is perhaps one of the most difficult questions for a foodie to answer. After 28 years of life, I have mine:

Pizza!

Pizza is easy to eat. It can gussied up with fancy toppings or it can be classic and simple. It’s perfect for sharing. It’s often super affordable. It’s loved by all ages. Plus, it’s delicious! Bread and cheese is truly a winning combo.

From woodfired creations at breweries to take out on the couch, I’ve had my fair share of pizza in Australia over the past 13 months. It is my foodie duties to share my journey with you! So without further ado….

My Top 5 Pizza Experiences in Australia

5. Lord of Pizza, Hobart

Pepperoni Pizza from Lord of Pizza in Hobart, Tasmania

The Pizza: Hobart has great seafood, awesome brunch, and fresh farm to table style restaurants. Good pizza, however, isn’t as easy to come by. Lord of Pizza dishes up New York style pizza that is perfectly greasy and ideal for a movie night on the couch along with a craft beer.

The Experience: When we heard that a New York style pizza place was opening in Hobart, our initial reaction was “this is going to be terrible!!!” We ordered a small to test the wastes. It wasn’t terrible. In fact, it was good! So good that picking up a large pizza became our post-adventure ritual. Every big hike or camping trip would finish with a tasty pie, and I have fond memories of noshing on a pepperoni pizza while resting my throbbing feat.

4. Revel Brewery, Brisbane

Pumpkin and pear pizza at Revel Brewing in Brisbane, Australia

The Pizza: This woodfired pizza from Revel Brewery was loaded up with butternut pumpkin, slices of pear, and rosemary. The combination of sweet, salty, and cheesy was pure perfection. Add in a gorgeous woodfired char and you’ve got one hell of a flavor combination!

The Experience: I volunteered at the Brisbane Beer festival. My reward for selling raffle tickets to inebriated Brisbanites was an invite to the afterparty at Revel Brewery. Jeremy was my plus one. We each got 3 free beer coupons each as well as free pizza. Enjoying pizza and beer on a sunny Sunday afternoon with likeminded beer lovers made for a perfect pizza experience.

3. Epic Pizza, Sydney

One slice of pepperoni pizza and one slice of Notorious P.I.G pizza from Epic Pizza in Sydney, Australia

The Pizza: The slices are huge, greasy and cheesy with a taste that screams “fresh ingredients!”  No bells and whistles. Just great pizza!

The Experience: Jeremy and I had 2 days in Sydney before driving up to Brisbane. After a wildly disappointing “Detroit style” pizza experience, we stumbled upon Epic Pizza just down the block. We got a couple slices and sat on the sidewalk, enjoying the nighttime breeze after a day of 30,000 steps across the city. It was the perfect cap to our Sydney adventure.

2. Manhattan Pizza, Brisbane

Massive pepperoni pizza from Manhattan pizza in Kangaroo point, Brisbane

The Pizza: In our quest for the best New York style pizza in Brisbane, Manhattan Pizza reigned supreme. The slices are delightfully thin with just enough cheese, pepperoni, and sauce.

The Experience: Manhattan Pizza was our final stop in our “New York slice of Brisbane” crawl. After a few disappointing pizza experiences, opening the massive box to reveal a glistening pie felt like a victory. It tasted like victory too!

1.Julius Pizzeria, Brisbane

Julius Pizzaria

The Pizza: The woodfired pizzas from Julius Pizzeria transported my taste buds back to Italy, and are without a doubt the best pizzas I’ve had in Australia. The crust was perfectly thin, the sauce was packed with flavor, there wasn’t too much cheese, and the toppings had an unbelievable freshness that totally knocked my socks off.

The Experience: This was the last meal Jeremy and I had together in Brisbane, marking the end of an era. I never thought that I’d live in Hobart for 4 months, a van for 2 months, and Brisbane for just over 6 months. The adventure and memories will stay with me forever, and this pizza served as the perfect period.

Did We Find Best Pizza in Australia?

Probably not!

We hardly scratched the surface of the Melbourne and Sydney pizza scene, and there are hundreds of pizza places we didn’t get to try. These 5 spots, however, served up exceptional pizza experiences for the books that I will remember for years to come!

  1. having pizza tonight. reasonably confident the place I get it from makes a better pizza – for my tastes at least – than these ones! Although the ones from Julius’s pizza look fracking brilliant Katie. Looks like the perfect gourmet wood fired people
