Domino’s Pizza has made a splash in the global pizza scene.
The chain has built up a reputation of being affordable and edible (some even say tasty!) with a top notch app that makes ordering a delivery a breeze. As of 2021, there are 18,848 stores across 83 countries, and those numbers have steadily been increasing year over year.
I’ve noshed on cheesy triangles of tastiness across the world. The $5AUD medium pizzas in Australia were a staple of our roadie across Queensland. In Mexico, Domino’s was our food of choice when we couldn’t fathom eating another taco.
How does Domino’s Pizza in Thailand stack up? You better believe I had to find out…
Domino’s Pizza first entered the Thai market in the 1990s, but quickly closed due to too much competition. It attempted to launch once again in 2013 under local partner Evolution Capital. Second times the charm. According to the website, there are 39 locations (with 3 closed), and most are in Bangkok and a handful in Pattaya.
My friend and I decided to order Domino’s Pizza in Thailand on one particularly rainy night. Here’s a run down of the experience and food.
The Service:
The online ordering process was exactly the same as it is everywhere—very easy and super clear. A cute little bar kept us up to date on our pizza’s progress, and it was delivered in a mere 15 minutes. Rather than pay online with my card, I paid the delivery driver with cash.
The Menu:
First things first, Domino’s Pizza in Thailand has some unique menu options. There’s a crabstix Hawaiian, Chicken Oppa (whatever that mean), shrimp cocktail, and even a green curry pizza. Our Food:
The 9” margherita with basil seasoning looked like an old friend. Round and cheesy with glimmers of marinara peeking through the cheese and just-thick-enough crust. I took a bite, and something was a bit off in the flavor. Perhaps it was the sauce? Maybe the cheese? It didn’t have that little hint of spice that Domino’s in other parts of the world has. It was fairly bland and ample chili flakes were needed to add some pizzazz.
In hindsight, I didn’t scroll far enough down to find the pepperoni pizza, so I ended up ordering a 7” super bacon. It tasted exactly like the cheese, but with a few thick slabs of bacon.
I couldn’t resist an order of Cinna Stix. Alas, they were lacking. The bread wasn’t warm, it was short on the cinnamon sugar, and the sauce was far to sugary and grainy.
The Price:
9” Cheese: 119 THB/ $3.35 USD
7” Baon: 69 THB/ $1.89 USD
Cinna Stix: 55 THB/ $1.50 USD
Now that’s a solid deal!!!!
So How Does Domino’s in Thailand Stack Up to the US, Australia, and Mexico?
Domino’s in Thailand is mega cheap. $3.35USD for a 9” pizza is a total steal! However, that nagging missing flavor made the pizza taste bland and boring compared to the US, Australia, and Mexico. While bread, sauce, and cheese are a winning combo, the Domino’s in Thailand is toeing the ever-feared “card board” line that many chain pizza spots are on.
Thus, my ranking of Domino’s across the world is as follows:
