Lusting for fluffy buns? Head to Chinatown! The Manhattan neighborhood is teeming with all types of buns that won’t cost you most than $3. With so many spots to choose from, you’ll face one serious qualm…. where should you go?!
I’ve got you covered with this guide to 3 spots for buns in Chinatown, NYC.
Mei Lai Wah: For the Delectable Fillings

The line that usually spills down the block from Mei Lai Wah for their roasted pork buns is well deserved. The roasted pork filling is tender and teeming with a deep pork flavor. The sauce has just a touch of sweet to balance out the salt and fat. You can go with a traditional steamed bun. Or gowild by getting the roasted pork pineapple bun. The crunchy top and added sweetness make for a unique flavor experience that’ll have you going back for more.
These babies are often hailed as the best buns in Chinatown, NYC. Do I agree? Well… I say go find out for yourself.
Kamboat Bakery: For the Sweet Buns

Kamboat Bakery is often described as “no-frills” and “unfussy.” AKA no ambiance and bland interior design. Lucky for you, my frugal friend, that means prices are dirt cheap and you can enjoy all types of beautiful buns for under $2. I tried out an egg custard bun and it was absolutely delectable. It had the perfect amount of sweet with a slightly crunchy exterior that gave me butterflies because it was so tasty,
Golden Steamer: For the Fluffy Buns

If huge fluffy buns is what you seek, head to Golden Steamer. This hole in the wall is famous for its mega fluffy, mega cheap steamed buns that you can get fresh on the spot or frozen for later. On my latest trip into Chinatown the only option left was Chinese sausage. I can’t say the sausage was good. But the bun itself has the perfect amount of sweetness and the perfect hug-the-inside-of-your-mouth texture.
The 3 spots for buns in Chinatown will leave both your belly and wallet full.
And remember, stay frugal.
