Juneau is the buzzing capital of Alaska with a population just over 32,000 people. It’s home to a quaint downtown area, the famous Mendenhall Glacier, and miles and miles of stunning nature.
Each Alaskan town is unique, and one peculiar feature of Juneau is that there are no roads in or out. All goods and people have to enter via plane or boat. Speaking of boat… Juneau is one of the most popular cruise ship stops in Alaska. And one that I have paid a visit to quite a few times.
On each stop I like to do something adventurous and something delicious. You see, Juneau has quite the culinary scene compared to other Alaskan ports. It would be criminal for a foodie to resist Right?
There is one spot we return to again and again:
A Juneau food truck park on the intersection of South Franklin and Front Street.
There are a handful of food options, a spot selling cold beer, and plenty of seats in the sun, making it one of the best places to eat in Juneau.
Juneau Food Truck Park Spots:
1. Deckhand Dave’s Fish Tacos
Deckhand Dave’s serves up salmon, rock fish, and halibut fish tacos that are fresh and zesty with a punch of heat, if you opt for a bit of spice that is. (The salmon and halibut are fried, but if that doesn’t tickle your fancy, the charred rock fish hits the spot.) They are topped with pico de gallo, cabbage, cilantro, and sauce, and pair perfectly with an Alaskan beer on a hot sunny day.
You can snag one ala carte for $5ish, an order of 3, or, my personal recommendation, get the 3 fish sampler for $14.99. It’s one of my favorite places to eat in Juneau, and one that shouldn’t be missed.
Note: They also run a champagne and oyster bar in the Juneau food truck park! I haven’t tried it, but it looks tasty.
2. Alaskan Crepe Escape
The Alaskan Crepe Escape has been a Juneau institution since 2008. They serve up a wide range of made to order sweet and savory crepes, and whoa baby are they delicious. The crepes are nice and thin with a little crunch, and they don’t skimp on the fillings.
The BBQ chicken is particularly delectable with plenty of cheese, sauce, and chicken—a winning combination that’s just about foolproof, after all.
3. Captain S’More and Brew
This Juneau food truck park spot serves up s’mores, wraps, and coffees. I’m a bit obsessed with s’mores, so I got a muddy moose To my dismay, it wasn’t a “s’more.” Rather, it was a giant marshmallow on top of a wafer piled high with banana and chocolate. I’m not a big marshmallow fan, but I can recognize it was fresh and good quality. Alas, for a whopping $7 pre-tax and tip…. this spot is not for me.
4. Beer Truck
There is a truck serving up Alaskan beers on tap as well as sodas. A necessity for washing down all the delicious food.
Wrapping Up this Juneau Food Truck Park Review…
These spots aren’t necessarily “frugal”, but Alaskan frugal finds are few and far between. Nearly 2 full years of no cruise ship tourism, rising gas prices, and inflation have all contributed to higher prices. And I get it. Prices might not be “cheap”, but I believe they are a reasonable value given the circumstances.
This Juneau food truck park has tasty food, a great atmosphere and is perfect for a post-adventure meal and beer. A must-try when visiting the area!
