My Top 5 Breakfast Sandwiches of 2022

If I’m eating a breakfast sandwich, it means some sort of adventure is afoot. Sometimes it’s an early morning expedition. In NYC, it’s usually part of some epic foodie excursion. Why? I’m more of a 5 minute oatmeal chef than a 30 minute bacon, egg, and cheese chef in the morning. (I love it when the apartment smells like bacon. But everyone else hates the sound of the smoke detector….)

2022 was choked full of adventure, which means there were loads of tasty breakfast sandwiches.

Let’s dive into my top 5 breakfast sandwiches of 2022!

5.  Egg, Cheese, Avo & Bacon Biscuit Sandwich from Dutch Baby Bakery

Egg, Cheese, Avo & Bacon Biscuit Sandwich from Dutch Baby Bakery

Dutch Baby Bakery is a top notch bakery nestled up in Washington Heights, NYC. Their breakfast biscuit sandwich is something special. The buttermilk biscuit it ultra buttery and flakey. There’s a healthy slab of avocado. And the bacon is perfectly crispy.

I ordered this gem the first day I moved into my Washington Heights sublet in September. It was my first taste of the neighborhood, earning it the #5 spot on my top 5 breakfast sandwiches of 2022 list.

4. Bacon, Egg, and Cheese on an Egg Bagel from Best Bagel and Coffee

BEC from Best Bagel and Coffee in NYC

Everyone who lives in New York has a favorite bagel spot. Mine is Best Bagel and Coffee on 34th street near Penn Station. The bagels are fat and podgy, which I love (even though traditional NY bagels are supposed to be smaller and a bit denser.) Best Bagel and Coffee’s BEC is everything you’d want from a breakfast sandwich. It’s greasy and salty with a heart warming  texture.

When Jeremy and I returned to NYC after a 2 ½ month trip through Mexico, we had to stay the night at The New Yorker before moving into our Astoria sublet. Best Bagel and Coffee just so happened to be right around the corner, so you better believe we got some breakfast sandwiches to say “Hey NY! We’re Back!”

3. Bacon, Egg, and Cheese on a Scallion Pancake from Win Son Bakery

Bacon, Egg, and Cheese on a Scallion Pancake from Win Son Bakery

Win Son Bakery in Brooklyn is a hip Taiwanese eatery that serves up epic pastries, coffees, and breakfast sandwiches. (It’s the locale of my top doughnut of 2022! Click HERE for the rundown!)

The BEC on a scallion pancake is genius. There’s no shortage of “heritage bacon” (whatever that means) and they use raclette as the cheese, which adds an ooey-gooeyness and slightly nutty flavor. If that’s not heart thumping enough, it’s all wrapped up in a greasy scallion pancake. The scallion flavor adds a nice freshness and the pancake is ever so crunchy.

My foodie pal Katie and I had been eyeing off Win Son Bakery for ages on social media before finally making the trek into Brooklyn to give it a go. It exceeded expectation, which is why it deserves a spot on this list.

2. Thai Diner Egg Sandwich from Thai Diner

Thai Diner Egg Sandwich

This gem features egg, cheese, herbal sausage, and Thai basil snuggly wrapped up in roti with a chili jam on the side. The eggs were perfectly fluffy and the sausage added that element of grease that’s so pivotal to a breakfast sandwich. Everything was held together in a warm and soft roti. Dip that baby in the chili jam, and you’ve got one hell of a breakfast sandwich!

1. Bacon Egg and Cheese Biscuit Sandwich from Jacob’s Pickles

Jacob’s Pickles is an Upper West Side institution that’s famous for its elevated southern comfort food. This beauty has 2 perfectly fried eggs, 2 year aged Vermont cheddar, sterling bacon, and some magical concoction called “picnic sauce” to tie it all together.

This was one of my last meals in NYC before shipping off to Africa, and it was the perfect farewell to the Big Apple.

Cheers to a year full of adventures and breakfast sandwiches!
